<p>There are many ways to setup <strong>WiFi</strong> on your <strong>Blackberry Storm device</strong>, but today at the <a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/" target="_blank"><strong>Blackberry Storm Blog</strong></a> I&#8217;ll discuss the easiest way for you. All you need to have is a router near you and a internet connection to it.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/1.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2741" title="1" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/1-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-2740"></span></p>
<p>Proceed to menu, setup folder which will have a bolt in green then choose Set up Wi-Fi and choose the first option: scan for Networks. Choose Turn Wi-Fi on if you previously haven&#8217;t then let it scan for the network. After that the network/s available will appear as well as their strength.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2742" title="2" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Your Blackberry Storm then will connect to the WiFi connection, you should have an option to save this profile as a network and the connection name which should be configured according to your preference. Then click next and finish.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/31.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2743" title="3" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/31-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>You have now configured a <strong>wireless connection</strong> to your <strong>Blackberry Storm</strong> which you can use which apps as well as the web browser but can also work with BBM if you leave the network on.</p>

<p>The OS loaded onto your Blackberry Storm is really big and takes up memory, I have found a guide that can help shrinking the OS then loading it onto your device via the Blackberry Desktop Manager.</p>
<p>Please note that this is only intended for Windows OS.</p>
<div>1. First back up phone data using Desktop Manager.</div>
<div>
<p>2. Then On your computer. proceed to Control Panel/Programs and Features, uninstall all the old as well as unwanted versions of “Blackberry Device Software”.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/UninstallOS.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2702" title="UninstallOS" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/UninstallOS-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>3.At times, some files still remain. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader to check if there is any remaining file, delete any OS related thing.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DeleteOSfromLoaderFilesFolder.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2703" title="DeleteOSfromLoaderFilesFolder" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DeleteOSfromLoaderFilesFolder-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>4. Search for a compatible OS for your Blackberry Storm. Then download and initiate the file to install the OS on your computer. If you use the Desktop Manger, it won&#8217;t work.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/InstallingDownloadedOS.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2704" title="InstallingDownloadedOS" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/InstallingDownloadedOS-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>5. Download latest version of <a href="http://www.theiexplorers.com/bb/Shrink-A-OS.exe" target="_blank">Shrink-A-OS</a> to your PC, then copy the file into the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\OS Folder .</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/CopyDownloadedShrink-A-OS.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2705" title="CopyDownloadedShrink-A-OS" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/CopyDownloadedShrink-A-OS-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
</div>
<div>
<p>6. Then run the Shrink-A-OS as administrator.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ShrinkinOSFolder.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2706" title="ShrinkinOSFolder" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ShrinkinOSFolder-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>7. Make sure that the box “Shrink-A-OS is in my Current OS folder&#8230;&#8221; has a tick.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/RunShrinkOS.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2707" title="RunShrinkOS" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/RunShrinkOS-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>8. Remove what you don&#8217;t want on the OS by ticking the correct boxes.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Shrink-S-OSWindow.jpg"></a><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/shrinkselectionsmade.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2709" title="shrinkselectionsmade" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/shrinkselectionsmade-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>9. For the final step, click on the big box that says Shrink my OS.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Shrinkresults84mbto37mb.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2710" title="Shrinkresults84mbto37mb" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Shrinkresults84mbto37mb-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /></a></p>
<p>10. Now connect your Blackberry Storm via USB to your computer..</p>
<p>11. Go to the same folder that you copied the Shrink-A-OS : C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader Folder</p>
<p>12. If you see the vendor file then delete it otherwis if you don&#8217;t have that file then skip this step.</p>
<p>13. Now, select the OS and install the new shrinked OS onto your Blackberry Storm.</p>

<p>I have experienced many difficulties on how to download large files on my <strong>Blackberry Storm</strong> that are essential to me. I finally found out <strong>how to remove</strong> that <strong>download limit</strong>. By some, this is considered a hack while others consider this a tutorial. Follow me after the break.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/remove-bb-storm-download-limit.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2638" title="remove bb storm download limit" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/remove-bb-storm-download-limit-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-2636"></span></p>
<p>This guide doesn&#8217;t require any technical steps or it isn&#8217;t hard at all, just go to options, advanced options, service books, the in landscape mode with number mode on, press &#8220;4?2?&#8221;. Then you should get something that says &#8220;Legacy SB Restore Enabled&#8221;. This means that you have successfully removed the <strong>download limit</strong>.</p>

<p>When you have setup your email address, you will get an option to sync your contacts with the address, all you have to do is press next. Then to make sure that this was successful, choose a random contact, if it says sync to the email address of your choice then it was successful.</p>

<p>When you are a beginner, you would want to setup your email accounts as soon as you have access to a BIS/BES. I don&#8217;t know if the same procedure is to be followed when setting up email with BES but I do know how to set up email with BIS.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Setup-email-accounts-1.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2531" title="Setup email accounts-1" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Setup-email-accounts-1-300x230.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="230" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-2530"></span></p>
<p>All you have to do is know the domain e.g Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail etc. There is an option which allows to use your own company&#8217;s domain.</p>
<p>Now, to start receiving the emails on your Blackberry Storm, go to setup, email settings, choose the correct options and then fill out the necessary requirements.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Setup-email-accounts-2.png"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2532" title="Setup email accounts-2" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Setup-email-accounts-2-300x225.png" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>
<p>Then, your email account shall appear on the menu. When you have received an email, it will appear under messages and the email address.</p>
<p>After setting up your email accounts, you can also add signatures and much more.</p>

<p>You may have have noticed that your Blackberry Storm device says that SMS and MMS full, delete some messages. I have gotten that error and after clearing my whole inbox, the error still comes up. The best way to avoid that it to gain 5MB more memory, you can delete applications but your device will still have the same factory memory, and not 5MB more. E.g- Factory memory is 2GB, after following my steps, you have 2.5GB.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Blackberry-Storm-error.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2374" title="Blackberry Storm error" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Blackberry-Storm-error.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="360" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-2373"></span>You will have to install a new Blackberry OS in your Storm. To make sure that you have a back up, it;s best to use Blackberry protect and also back up your device via the Desktop Manager, if you want to keep your 3rd party applications, follow my guide of yesterday.</p>
<p>After downloading the new OS on your PC, literally install it, then be-careful with the next step. Delete the following only please,<br />
net_rim_bb_medialoader_backgrounds_360x480_t.cod and net_rim_bb_medialoader_360x480_t.cod files., deleting other files may cause the OS to be corrupt and not work when you try to install it.</p>
<p>Then after all those steps, then finally load the new OS on to your device and it should work. I haven&#8217;t tried this method out yet.</p>
<p>Please make sure that you are using Windows OS as this won&#8217;t work on any Linux version, even with Wine installed. If you do get it right with Linux, let us know so that we can share it with others.</p>

<p>There isn&#8217;t just 1 type of Blackberry Storm in the world. you may have the Verizon version or even the Vodafone version. Each carrier, especially in the USA, have their own type of Blackberry Storm as they have different types of network antennas. I am currently holding a Blackberry Storm in South Africa even though it isn&#8217;t made form South African networks. Similar to different Storm, each one has their own shortcuts but today I will only mention the general ones.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Blackberry-Storm-Shortcuts.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2368" title="Blackberry Storm Shortcuts" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Blackberry-Storm-Shortcuts.jpg" alt="" width="416" height="250" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-2367"></span> I knew how to bring up the event log and delete the events from my device, even though the trick was for the 9550, it still didn&#8217;t work, instead, I tried another method. Check out my post just dedicated for the <a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/2011/02/12/how-to-clear-event-log-on-blackberry-storm/" target="_blank">Event Log</a>.</p>
<p>The default setting for the network strenght is to show bars, but I get tired of that so I tried out the following, press the Blackberry button, show keyboard, number lock, and then I typed ! ,&#8221; &#8221; (exclamation mark, comma, quotation marks, quotation marks).</p>
<p>Another shortcut to change the languages, is to have the landscape keyboard on, then press global, the key right after the space.</p>
<p><a href="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Blackberry-Storm-Keyboard.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2370" title="Blackberry Storm Keyboard" src="http://the-blackberry-storm.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Blackberry-Storm-Keyboard.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="202" /></a></p>
<p>You may notice at some stage, to enable a few things on the Blackberry Storm, you may have to go to a &#8220;Help Me!&#8221; screen. SOme websites/forums say that you have to hold he back button, then click on the top left, top right, and again do the same procedure. It won&#8217;t specify if this must be in landscape mode or portrait.</p>
<p>The correct version is to hold the back button in landscape mode, then tap the top left, top right and do it again.</p>
<p>The above shortcut was for all the Blackberry Storm devices, from the Telus version to the Dubai version. Now, the next shortcut is only for the CDMA enabled devices such as the Blackberry Storm 9550, on the dial screen, input ##000000 and press call. This should show up a screen and show a CDMA service screen.</p>
<p>For today, thats all. Follow me tomorrow for more shortcuts or as I discover them, I&#8217;ll post them here.</p>
