Slacker Free Internet Radio With Thousands of Free Songs
I found a new application compatible with the Blackberry Storm, it is called Slacker and is a free app that lets you listen to thousands of songs completely free. This is how it works: The user opens Slacker and searches for an artist, lets say ”Pink Floyd”. Then Slacker locates songs from Pink Floyd and other similar artists for you to hear. The cool thing about Slacker is that you discover thousands of new songs you like that otherwise you would not hear, since I installed Slacker I don’t listen to my pre-loaded music anymore because its boring, instead Slacker brings me something new every day. You definitively should give it a try, on top it is free! If you are familiar with last.fm you will find that Slacker is like last fm for Blackberry Storm.
To install Slacker you need to download this: http://www.slacker.com/dwls/bb/slacker_mobile.jad by clicking over it with your Blackberry Storm Web Browser, it is an Over The Air installation. After installation is complete you need to go to Menu > Options > Advanced Options > Applications. Then locate Slacker highlight it and press the BB Option Menu. You need to do two things, first select ”Disable Compatibility Mode” and after doing that select ”Edit Permissions” and select ”Allow” on the all boxes, then SAVE and get out. Then open Slacker, this step is hard because as Slacker is not made for the Storm alhtough it works 100% it is difficult to fill all the registration boxes I suggest you uuse it in portrait (Normal) mode, but don’t worry this is the only hard step because managing the player is really easy. If you have any problem just leave a comment and we will help!
UPDATE: People have been telling me they are having problems with Slacker, to make sure it works you must EDIT permissions as I described above. Set all to allow and you are ready to go.

Howdy Howdy, I d/l this app and everytime I goto a channel to listen to it continuously sayss buffering and never starts playing. I have set all of my permissions to “Allow” and disabled Compatibility Mode. I also downloaded Orb for my storm, and couldnt get that to work. My carrier is Telus and I seem to think that is why I am having trouble with these Streaming programs via craberry blog:
http://forums.crackberry.com/f134/storm-orb-what-settings-124291/
Does anyone have any other suggestions that could get these apps up and running for me and the rest of the Telus community?
Thanks a ton for any input

I really don’t know, but I also don’t see why it would not.
As long as you have an internet connection is should work.

Here it goes easier.
Click on Options on the menu of your storm, then on Advanced Options, then click on applications and find slacker. Then just highlight (no clicking) press the BB button below on the physical buttons next to the green call button . And there you will find everything.
Was it helpful?

Slacker isn’t working properly for me on my storm. It gets near the end of a song and then skips to the next song and I have to push the volume button on the phone to hear the next song. It sometimes skips more than one song? Can you help? I love the thought of having this application!
January 13th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
I also have the jumping problem, I think it is because it is not the full version and as you already know slacker extends its functionality by buying the full version. I am thinking about getting it, after all it is a really useful/fun app.
January 13th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Edward, I had that same thought about the full version, but I did get a response from Slacker that this is a known issue because they haven’t released a version for the Storm yet. They said it should be out soon. You could try the full version for free – let us know if you do and if that works! How many times haven’t we heard that apps aren’t available yet for the Storm? I should have waited to get the phone! I sure appreciate this site for keeping up!

Hi. I did everything suggested but it gets to the loading part and freezes. Maybe I should of asked this first. Does it work in Canada? on the slacker sight it says US only.
Thanks

Similar to Curt and Edmund, I have the jumping problem too. Also, once I choose a station and a song is playing, I can’t seem to switch to another station. Has anyone had a similar issue? Any advice on fixes? Thanks!
January 15th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
i’ve got a problem too… when i get to play a station, it says buffering and then “could not get track” and so nothing appears and the songs never start playing… i don’t know what to do!
January 16th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Edward, to say its buffering – am using mine in ireland does it work here? or am i missing something -tried for 3days now and no joy please help
January 16th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
@ everybody with problems.
Did you set permissions to allow? And disabled compatibility mode? In some cases this will work, but some carriers lock the use of 3rd party applications to the internet. Verizon Blackberries should have NO problem, just set the permissions and disable compatibility mode and you are ready to go!
January 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
When I go to that link on my BB Storm, it says that “The Slacker Radio Application is coming soon for the BlackBerry Storm”
Is anyone else seeing that. I thought it was ready for the Storm.
January 18th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
applications works great and the sound is pretty clear for streaming radio, have to say i was kind of upset by no application for pandora yet but this is a close second, i have no issues at all with the app

I disabled the compatibility mode and set all options to allow. The program worked just as you stated but when it goes to download it says buffering for a few seconds and then tells me to sign in again with “abuse” in parenthesis. I just got my Storm 2 days ago and my Slacker account is brand new. When I go to the slacker website it just tells me about how to cache stations. What am I doing wrong?
January 19th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Hi, I have just downloaded Slacker to my Storm, have disabled the compatibility and set the permissions. I requested a couple of channels to cache, and when I put my little SD card into my pc the channels updated and put about 400Mb of songs onto the card. Now when I start Slacker and try to access those channels – which I know have been stored and loaded – the storm sort of stalls at “buffering”. Any thoughts to help?

I’ve been using the full version (paid) for about a week and love it (on my Storm)
I have a set of computer speakers next to my bed and I have a bluetooth Jabra sp700 for the car. This connects to the Storm and lets the music play on the car speakers. I’ve been playing the “John Lithgow” station for my 5 year old and “Jason Mraz” for my 8 year old.
In the morning I play Slacker in the bedroom for the kids when they are getting dressed.
(At night I play lullabyes that I have loaded on the memory card)
If I try to play the music without being hooked up to the speakers (or bluetooth) I have to hit the volume up or down to hear the next song.
Also, the songs do cut off about 20 seconds before they are fininished.
Today I got a message that said “6 skips left”… I shouldn’t have gotten that message becuase I paid.
I went on the live chat on the Slacker site and was told that the Storm version should be out within the month and that he can’t do anything because they don’t officially support the storm yet.
He said to check the forums for the release date.
I deleted the program and reloaded it and it remembered me, just had to sign in again and it seems to be working again.
PS: I like the “James Taylor” station.

Works great!
Sounds Great!
January 20th, 2009 at 2:32 am
I’m trying to load Slacker….I have it on my Blackberry but when I try and open it….Slacker won’t recognize my email address and password. I have tried different email addresses. Any ideas?
January 21st, 2009 at 1:44 am
I just downlaoded and set it up and is working ok. What may help out is to register on your pc. I use the web and software based version at work every day and have my stations set up and as soon as I signed in they were available. It does sometimes online take a while to buffer so for it to take some time on the storm I would not consider unusual.
January 23rd, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Thank you so much for the tip! Slacker was easy to install and it works great! I love it, and you’re right…It’s all I listen to now. It has a lot of artists that I can never find in mainstream radio or as a download. Thanks again!!!

I am a nebbie to black berry and I was able to get it on my storm thanks
January 25th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Didnt work for me. I couldn’t get it to get past the gender tick box. I don’t think this is a free app any more.
January 30th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
I just downloaded it yesterday. Verizon BB Storm:
following issues.
-Have to hit volume buttom to hear next song, ONLY if no headphones are plugged in.
-Song ends early
-Occasional buffering and freezing.
Can’t wati for the official version to show up!
February 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 am
I couldnt get the screen to click in the zipcode box when attempting to register, but fortunately it allowed me to register without filling that in.
Wish the app was a little faster, but isnt that true of everything on the storm?
February 13th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Followed all of the above directions….Creating an account was painful (would NOT work in portrait mode) So painful I deleted it from my applications list, which then caused my phone to crash (screen shows static, white, black, then a clock icon??….) Any ideas?
February 13th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
there is a new version for the storm, you should try it: http://the-blackberry-storm.net/2009/02/07/slacker-free-internet-radio-with-millions-of-free-songs-is-now-available-for-the-blackberry-storm/

July 8th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
There is still an issue with the slacker Storm player. Everytime I get a e-mail notification it restarts the current song. Essentially I could end up listening to the same song for an hour the way I get e-mails. Anyone else have this issue?

December 14th, 2009 at 1:03 am
I’m having problems with the registration process, when i try to log in it displays this message “Login Failed. (Client Exception) Failed to process request: java.lang.NullPointerException: (no message). I live in the Dominican Republic maybe this is why it’s not working, can someone tell me if i can fix this, or should i give up on this app?
