Today was my first day with the Blackberry Storm, I used it the whole day to get used to it and know its tricks. I charged my Blackberry the whole night, then I took it with me for the whole day. Everything went fine, I do have some complains but I will save that for other post. At the end of the day I noticed that I was almost running out of battery life, I thought it was weird, because it should offer more battery life. And I indeed found the way to make your Storms run longer!!, the secret is in the GPS. In the Storm the GPS is ALWAYS ON by default, that means that the Storm is always connected to the GPS satellite even if you are not using the navigation. To check if your Storm has the GPS ON check below the signal indicators for a circle with two crossed lines, if there are some waves pointing the right then the GPS is ON wasting precious battery life.
Turning the GPS to save battery life is really easy, but note that by doing this the navigator will tell you that there is no GPS available and you will have to manually activate it, and it will naturally take more time to lock-in satellites that if it were already turned ON. But at least for me it does not matter because I can use my Storm longer! And if I need navigation I will just turn the GPS ON!
To turn the GPS OFF just follow this simple steps:
First locate and click ”Options” in the Menu.
The click over ”Advanced Options”
And finally over ”GPS”
There should be three boxes, the first one is alright, does not need modification. The second one change it to ”E911 Only” that means that your Storm will only activate the GPS in case of Emergency. Then the third box should be in ”Disabled”. Save the settings and go to the main screen.
There you should have the circle without the waves, Now you are saving battery life!! To use the navigator just follow the same process and activate again the two lower boxes. Imagine! If my Storm lasted one whole day with the GPS ON, imagine with the GPS which is the most battery demanding feature OFF!

My GPS was turned on all the time, but I never had those waves next to the symbol.
Then you had the GPS off! Lol.
I agree with the first commenter; In my GPS options menu it was set to always on but I didn’t have the symbol on the home screen. Switching the GPS settings to off did subsequently improve battery life so it is obvious it was switched on permanently, even without a symbol showing.
What firmware version/network were you using when you had the symbol on the home screen? I’m on Vodafone with 4.7.0.78 firmware.
I never had symbol on home screen either, but when following instructions just to check GPS status i found it was on all the time, thanks for helping me sort my ever demanding power problem out Edward
Welcome! I am glad I am helping!
I have been trying to figure out what that symbol was for a few days, thank-you for the post !!!!
Right I am confused! I just received from Vodafone and am very happy about from the shocking battery life!!
I don’t have the GPS symbol on the home screen, but my battery is driaing so only can assume it is on. However, I have followed the steps outlined but my Storm doesn’t have the info you have detailed. I have three choices:
GPS Data Source (can’t change anything here)
GPS Services (choices are location off or on)
Location aiding (choices are enabled, disabled and disabled while roaming)
There is NO E911 only – which I presume refers to the American 911 Emergency Services??!!
Either way I have made changed what I can to location off and disabled and STILL my battery is drained and requires 2 charges per day!
Please help me…….
Thanks for the great tip. I did notice the symbol but never paid any mind to it. So I’m sure it did have the waves pointing to the right. When not using it. I also did have the GPS aiding enabled. Thanks for help. Will spread the news to other STORM users!!
Thanks Mr. President! lol

PLEASE CAN YOU RESPOND TO MY MESSAGE POSTED ON 20TH MARCH
HELP!!!
Mark Lewsey, you’re borish and very rude. I wouldn’t respond to you either. Stop playing games on your Storm all day long, get a job, and your battery life will drastically improve! And when you want help from someone, DON’T USE CAPITAL LETTERS!
1st set to off, and location aiding disabled. Dont let the internet browser running and set the email retrieval to off, also, dont let you navigation GPS , google maps etc.. running. Low your screen brightness in settings, if this does not work you probably got a defective uniit
my wifes storm GPS is always on and her battery life is fine, mines on the other hand isnt. whats up with that?
You maybe use more data, if you are extremely short on battery you could turn the 3G off.
my options doesn’t show all of those, it just says password
thanks!!!! that really helped
