Storm App: Opera Mini 4.2 Web Browser – Free Software For The Blackberry Storm

A really cool thing about the Storm is the ability to install free applications, one of the the best applications out there for the Blackberry Storm is Opera Mini Web Browser. Opera Mini is the most popular web browser among smartphones, it loads pages usually faster than the built-in browser and it completely free!.  It is a very personal opinion which browser is better, if Opera or the BB Browser, so why don’t you try it in your Storm and see it for yourself? I think that Opera is two to three times faster than the BB Browser!  Besides, Opera is one of the most downloaded apps in history, by far it is also the most useful application in a phone because it is very practical, easy and fun to use, in some cases it is even better than the default browser, you should definitively try it.  With Opera Mini you can load any web page in less than 5 seconds, the Opera Mini free web browser for the Blackberry Storm is much faster in loading pages than the Storm browser by default. It lets you save bookmarks and download images plus more options, it is maybe my favorite app for the Storm.  To download Opera Mini to your Blackberry Storm go to  the Storm forum here: Blackberry Storm Forum  , then just follow the simple steps and complete the installation.   What do you think about Opera Mini?? Is it better than the built-in browser?

The Opera Mini isn’t bad, but there are a few quirks.  Most notably when typing a URL in portrait mode, the keyboard doesn’t work right.  I have to switch to landscape mode to be able to type it out.  I like that I have an alternative to the built-in browser which goes through my employer’s servers.

Off topic #1:  What’s the deal with “Sure Type”.   It is anything but.   Multitap is the only option in portrait mode as far as I’m concerned.

Off topic #2:  Why does Google mobile mail take so freaking long to notify me of new messages.   If it can’t be push, it can at least be a 5-minute poll.  I’ve had a message for 30 minutes now and the mobile app still hasn’t notified me.    I know I can set up Gmail to push through BIS, but that has drawbacks as well.

Is opera mini even out for the storm yet?  It’s not listed on operamini.com

Yes it is. I am using it right now to answer you!

  4. edward umana Says:

Just click on download opera mini after you go to opera minicom in your storms browser.
I had to make two attempts before it was successful

  5. phong Says:

Um I attempted to download opera but it says it can’t find my model (storm) but there is an option to download 4.2 but it has no signature, what does that mean? And is it bad to download something with no signature?
I’m doing this all of my storm by the way I tried downloading it off the default browser

  6. Edward Umana Says:

Go ahead, Opera Mini is a Recognized and trusty company.

  7. ken Says:

ok, so ive tried this on my storm with no success. ived changed the browser from explorer to bb to firefox and still nothing, it says the page is too big. i even tried downloading opera mini to my laptop and transfer it through my data cable and still no success. please help!

  8. Edward Umana Says:

Weird, I go to operamini.com and I get a download link. It should work by putting the browser to bb. But as you said it did not work, search for opera mini on google.

  9. Jeff Says:

I love the speed of Opera in loading websites, but the keyboard is wonky and clicking on links is problematic. I’ve found that hovering over the link seems to work as it pulls up “right click” options. Hopefully, they will update it with a Storm friendly option. Not sure if I’m ready to use it as my fulltime browser.

  10. Greggory Says:

Visit mini.opera.com with the Storm’s browser.

  12. Edward Umana Says:

That is ridiculous, go to the store and demand a storm with a web browser!

  13. Matt Says:

To bring your browser back resent the service books from BIS

  14. ricardo Says:

I downloaded the opera mini in my storm after a few tries, but still don’t see the icon for the browser

  15. Edward Umana Says:

it should be on the downloads section, if not applications. If you dont find it make sure it is installed by going options>settings>advanced options> applications. The search for operamini, if it is not there download again

  16. Lance Says:

Sorry, that first bit of help was meant for Ken not Edward.

  17. Phil Says:

  18. Ted Says:

every time i go to the download page it tells me downloading is simple. visit mini.opera.com and follow on screen instructions. i get no instructions. that brings me to the main page. uggggh very very frustrating! wth am i doing wrong?

After using the BB Browser, Opera Mini and Bolt Browser, I find myself constantly going back to BB Browser.  Sure it is a little slower, but it is reliable.  Opera Mini doesn’t work correctly (mainly typing) because it is not optimized for the Storm.  Bolt Browser is very fast and much better than Opera, but you have to click through too many menu options that are more quickly access with BB Browser.  I just hope that BB will improve the standard browser over time.

  21. janette Says:

i just downloaded it and am pretty happy with it, the only problem is everytime i try to download a new application it sends me to the default bb browser and i get an error 503 message something about the host … basically downloading apps is a pain on this phone… also, it keeps prompting me for every little think, like it asks if it is ok to access the network, etc…

  22. denise Says:

I’ve been using Opera mini on my 8830 since last summer and prefer it for most sites.  Just got a storm and have found the opera mini is very glitchy.  I’m bummed, as the BB browser goes thru the corporate BES server which is firewalled and you cannot access sites like facebook, myspace, etc.  Opera bypasses the BES and firewall.

As of now, I cannot seem to get logged into facebook on Opera Mini on the storm.  I just can’t get the hover to work properly to select the “login” icon on the page.  Very frustrating.

  23. Mark Says:

Ok, I downloaded Operamini from my Storm and installed it, now where do I find it to use it?  The only place I know to switch from browser to browser  is under ‘options’ with a browser open…all I see is still BB, FireFox, and IE.

  24. Jaymi Says:

I followed all instructions and opera never sent the sms to my phone. its been two days and it wont let me try again and when i do it says an sms has already been sent to that number. sooo help?

  25. Mark Says:

Finally, got it working. The keyboard is screwed in Opera. When I bring up the numbers to type an ip address in the URL bar, it still types in lower case letter :(

  26. Ted Says:

Jaymi, I had the exact same problem. I had to download the right version to my pc then use Desktop Manager -> Application Loader to put it on my Storm. I had to really search the site for the version for the Storm. i didn’t want to use the generic version.  You can try http://www.getjar.com/products/3334/OperaMiniWebbrowser

The link to OperaMiniWeb Browser is there for 9530. Good Luck. I do like Opera Mini Browser a lot better than the BB Browser. I like that it turns the BB into a touchscreen instead of click screen.

  27. Roon Says:

Opera Mini is great on the storm as long as you don’t ever need to tick a check box!

  28. Edward Umana Says:

:) haha, you are completely right!

  29. jlo Says:

Mini Opera is not good for Storm…if you must interact with the web site (select radio buttons, press buttons,…)

  30. Giselle Says:
